CSU’s coach Mills on ESPN

The Charleston Southern University Buccaneers football team kicks off their
2009 season this Saturday night in Gainesville, Florida against the defending BCS National Champion Florida Gators.

When asked by ESPN what Charleston Southern has to gain by playing the Gators, Bucs head coach Jay Mills replied, “We’re a Christian school, and we’re a school that has a vision integrating faith nationally, recognized for integrating faith in learning, leading and serving, and what better stage and format than athletics …”

As 73-point underdogs, Mills was asked what the Bucs must do on the field to make the game a success. He told ESPN, “We evaluate things a little differently at Charleston Southern University … success or failure in a performance-driven society is based on the W’s and the L’s, and we want to win just as much as Florida or anyone else … our identity is not going to be based on what the scoreboard reads after the ballgame … we are about excellence in the things that we do. We follow a theme that first we’ll be the best, then we’ll be first and that’s really what we can control along the way.”
